Who We Are

The Door Safety Council (DSC) is a coalition of concerned building trade organizations formed to address issues of life safety. The need for properly operating fire doors and doors in the means of egress are a primary focus, as they are an integral link in the life safety and property protection chain. As far back as 1911, at the time of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire code officials have understood the importance of creating codes governing means of egress and protection against the spread of fire and smoke. Current codes require the inspection of elevators, sprinkler systems and overhead doors, while remaining silent on doors designed to provide similar degrees of protection. Adding requirements for the annual inspection of egress and fire doors is crucial to maintaining high standards of life safety and property protection.
